Belly Dance Wear Links
Another little link for finding some basic costume stuff. I’ve posted links on here before for professional and amateur costumes. You should be able to find them in the archive.

Just thought i’d put out this link as a resource for anyone else wondering where they can take lessons. This applies mainly to the U.S. There are some entries for Canada.
I’m sure EVERYTHING isn’t on here, so don’t hesitate to google search as well for a studio close to home.
I’ve sadly never been to Massachusets, but from google search it seems like there are some studios in your area. :)
I’d start off by checking out the websites, which studio might be closer to you, and who has a dance schedule that works with your school/personal schedule.
Sometimes normal dance studios offer belly dance as well. Don’t forget to see if maybe there is something there for you as well.
I don’t know about any books but there are some great instructional videos about gothic belly dance by Ariellah or Tempest or DVD performances. You could even look up videos on youtube for reference.
What are you trying to find specifically though? Like the history of gothic belly dance?
Just some more places to find some professional costumes. Be forewarned, if you are a beginner I suggest finding pieces to build your first costume, or look for a bra and belt set. Those tend to not be horribly expensive. Then you can make your own skirt or find one separately to make a professional looking costume. The costumes you see the belly dance superstars wear are very pricey, but tons of care and love go into making these hand beaded costumes, which is why they are so expensive.
Didem gets a lot of her costumes here.

Black Lotus Clothing has some really great pieces for building a gothic/victorian looking costume.

You might even have some luck looking around on Ebay, Etsy and Amazon.

If you are looking for falls as well, there are some great tutorials online showing you how to make them yourself. All you need is a hair straightener, water, and wool yarn in whatever colors you choose.

Other then that, I would use some of your favorite dancers as inspiration and start to break down what they use for their costumes and use that as inspiration to build your own.
I hope that helps!! :)
That is a good question. I would ponder about what mood I bring to my dance and think of a name that matches that aesthetic. Some people use their first name and choose an exotic sounding last name for their stage name. Maybe you could even make a cool anagram of your name, which would become your belly dancer name. I would even go onto a baby name website and find something that has a certain meaning I’m looking for. Example, say I love flowers and I love egyptian style dancing, so I’ll look up something thats arabic/ egyptian that has some sort of flower meaning. I’ll also look up something like love or light because thats what dancing should be about. :)
Search comes up with:
So I’ll just keep searching until I find something I really like. Just choose something you find meaningful and beautiful. It’ll match you no matter what. <3
Thank you for saying this better than I ever could! Everyone needs to read this.
I saw two posts earlier in the #belly dance tag that had me fuming. One user asking if there were other “fat” belly dancers out there because she was the “only fat one in her class” as well as a post before THAT regarding to one of the local dance studios performing at Camelot Days last year,…
Belly dance isn’t about looking like a model on stage, its about the movement and how you interpret the music. A lot of dancers are fit because its a great form of exercise, but that is not what makes the dancer beautiful.
Just please don’t ever stop dancing because you become self conscious.
Edit: I’m sorry that came across as offensive, thats not what I meant to do at all.

or do you know anyone who has pictures of themselves being fat and a belly dancer?
I’m still really new at it and I’m the fattest person in my class. I just want to know I’m not the only one out there!
I love it so much, it my life, it’s everything to me. Its something I love doing and could never ever get tired of. I love expressing/letting my emotions out when I’m dancing. I love performing. I feel like nothing and no one could bring me down. It has changed me in so many ways and for the better. I don’t think anyone understands how much I love belly dancing.
I know I can relate. :)
